 What is Fasting and Abstinence? 

Most Eastern rites, both Catholic and Orthodox, have laws of fasting and abstinence. Abstinence is obligatory after reaching the age of 14 and fasting becomes obligatory from age 18 until 60th birthday. In general, the law of abstinence prohibits eating the flesh, marrow and blood products.  The motives for practicing abstinence are well explained by St. Augustine in his Sermon on Prayer and Fasting: “Abstinence purifies the soul, elevates the mind, and subordinates the flesh to the spirit.” 

The most common food for Lent are fish, soups and eggs. This year, I adopted the Japanese tradition of Ramen and Vegetable Creams. Let’s benefit from Fasting and Abstinence this Lenten Season  by cooking and eating together with our kids.

¿Qué es el ayuno y la abstinencia?

La Cuaresma para los ritos católicos u ortodoxos, tienen leyes para el ayuno y la abstinencia. En general, la ley de la abstinencia prohíbe comer la carne, productos con sangre y médula ósea. La abstinencia es obligatoria después de alcanzar la edad de 14 y el ayuno se convierte en obligatorio a partir de los 18 años hasta 60 años.

Los motivos para la práctica de abstinencia son bien explicados por San Agustín en su sermón sobre la oración y el ayuno: "la Abstinencia purifica el alma, eleva la mente, subordina la carne al espíritu."

Vamos a aprovechar el ayuno y la abstinencia de la Cuaresma para cocinar y comer con nuestros hijos. La comida más común para la Cuaresma son pescados, sopas, creams y huevos. Este año he adaptado la tradición Japonesa del Ramen y las cremas de vegetales.

Valentine's Day

 

Each year on February 14^th, many people exchange cards, with their special “valentine," but  What is Valentine? It is a day to celebrate love and friendship.

Why is called Valentine? It comes from a Christian martyr from the 5^th century and Roman Traditions.

Who is St. Valentine? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine, all of whom were martyred.

About the Legend? Valentine was a Bishop in the third century in Rome. Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape from Roman prisons during Emperor Claudius. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Celebrate LOVE Month 💗

San Valentin

Cada año el 14 de febrero, muchas personas intercambian tarjetas, con su especial "San Valentín", pero  ¿Qué es San Valentín? Es un día para celebrar amor y amistad.

La leyenda dice que San Valentín fue un obispo en el tercer siglo en Roma. San Valentín fue asesinado por intentar ayudar a los cristianos a huir de las prisiones durante el Tiempo Romano del emperador Claudius. Antes de su muerte, se dice que escribió una carta firmada: "De tu Valentín," una expresión que hoy en día es muy usada en éste día.

Mardi Gras Tradition

 Mardi Gras Traditions is about musical parades, food, floats and excitement. During the parades, people use purple, green and gold beads and colorful masquerades.

The term “Mardi Gras” (French word) means “Fat Tuesday”and refers to the Tuesday before Lent. It is called "Fat" or "Great" because it's associated with great food, king cake, and parties. Lent  starts the day after Mardi Gras with Ash Wednesday

A king cake is a type of cake associated with the Feast of Epiphany celebrated twelve days after Christmas or related with the pre-Lenten celebrations of Mardi Gras. 

The serving ritual: With Galette comes the tradition of “drawing the king and the queen”. A trinket (called “la fève”) is hidden in the galette (before baking it, usually inserted inside the frangipane filling). The galette is then cut up and served, and the person who finds the figurine in their slice, becomes honorary king or queen for the day.

Activities for Mardi Gras: 

1. Create a Masquerade with any recycle supplies you have at home. 

2. Make a King Cake.

¿Qué es Mardi Gras?

El término "Mardi Gras" (palabra francesa) significa "Martes gordo" y se refiere al martes antes de Cuaresma. Se llama "Grasa" o "Gran" porque se asocia con la buena comida y festivales. Mardi Gras es una tradición similar a los Carnavales de Rio, Barranquilla, New Orleans y todos los países que celebran con desfiles de carrozas y bailes tradicionales antes del Miércoles de Ceniza cuando inicia la Cuaresma.  Usualmente se hace la Rosca de Reyes o de Mardi Gras/Carnival.

El ritual de servir: con la galette llega la tradición de "sortear al rey y a la reina". Se esconde una baratija (llamada "la fève") en la galette (antes de hornearla, suele introducirse dentro del relleno de frangipane). Después se corta la galette y se sirve, y la persona que encuentra la figurita en su trozo, se convierte en rey o reina honorario del día.

Lourdes: Expression of Faith ~ Expresión de fe

 

Virgen de Lourdes, pray for us!

During my two visits to The Lourdes Shrine, France (1988-1989), I was mesmerized with the amount of people who visit this small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees, famous site of the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes. 

The events occurred in 1858 to a humble firstborn daughter girl of a miller; Bernadette Soubirous (7 January 1844 – 16 April 1879). She is recognized as a saint in the Catholic Church. The feast day is on February 11^th.  

During  my visit to this Shrine, I admired the atmosphere of Faith. We spent most of the time in the Basilica and Grotto where masses and confessions in different languages are scheduled.  After lunch, we stopped over the humble house of Bernadette. 

I loved the simplicity of this small place where the whole family lived in a modest way. The house included a mill, kitchen, Bernadette’s bedroom, various objects, and photographs of the time.

In the evening, we prayed the Rosary in different languages as a universal form of Catholic unity. During the continuous prayers to Jesus and Mary, there was a candlelight procession to gather around the Grotto. Other members of my group would visit the Healing Pools, where families brought the sick to be healed. A unique expression of faith

¡Yo soy la Inmaculada Concepción! 

Durante mis dos visitas al Santuario de Lourdes, Francia (1988-1989), me maravillo ver la cantidad de personas que visitan esta pequeña ciudad situada en las estribaciones de los Pirineos, sitio r famoso por las apariciones marianas de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. 

Los acontecimientos ocurrieron en 1858 a una humilde niña primogénita de un molinero; Bernadette Soubirous (7 de enero de 1844 – 16 de abril de 1879).  Es reconocida como santa en la Iglesia Católica. La fiesta de Lourdes se celebra cada 11 de febrero.

Durante mi visita a este Santuario, admiré el ambiente de Fe. Pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo en la Basílica y la Gruta, donde están programadas misas y confesiones en diferentes idiomas.  Después de comer, nos detuvimos en la humilde casa de Bernadette. 

Me encantó la sencillez de este pequeño lugar donde toda la familia vivía modestamente. La casa incluía un molino, la cocina, el dormitorio de Bernadette, diversos objetos y fotografías de la época.

Por la noche, rezabamos el Rosario en diferentes idiomas como forma universal de unión católica. Durante las continuas oraciones a Jesús y María, había una procesión con velas para reunirse alrededor de la Gruta. Otros miembros de mi grupo visitaban las Piscinas de Curación, donde las familias llevaban a los enfermos para que se curaran. Una expresión única de fe.
