Multicultural Children's Book Day in Orlando

The past two years, I have been participated in the Multicultural Children's Book Day (#MCCBD) as author and Reviewer. The collaborative effort between organizers and authors was beyond expectations. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the ongoing need to include kid’s books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves.

Multicultural Children's Book Day was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom.

This year, #MCCBD land on January 27/18

I'll be part at the FIRST Multicultural Children's Book Day

in Orlando.

The purpose of the Meet the Author series is to give readers and aspiring writers the opportunity to hear from seasoned, successful writers.

Key Ingredients in selecting Multicultural Books for Children

Today I attending a Webinar on Celebrating Diversity: A Discussion on Children's Literature That Reflects Today's World.

Here are a few Key Ingredients in selecting Multicultural Books for Children:

1. Positive images that leave lasting impressions

2. Accurate, factual information that is also enjoyable to read

3. Cultural authenticity/cultural specificity

4. Meaningful stories that reflect a range of diverse values

5. A positive perspective on the aspects of being a person of color

6. Nonfiction that is relevant to issues in today’s world

7. Material that is self-affirming

8. Presentation of strong, three-dimensional characters

9. Well written information

10. Attractive graphics

Book Review and Activity of Rescue Ranch Children's Books

Ricky and Bobo

by Mark Albini

REVIEW

An excellent rhyming picture book for children ages 4-6 years old. Ricky and Bobo is the second book in the collection of animals who live at the Rescue Ranch. The adventure begins when Ricky the rabbit snuck out of the house with his friend Bobo the mouse. While they think would be a simple quest, it turns out into a dangerous venture.

First, the two friends encounter a swarm of buzzing bees. Then Ricky and Bobo have trouble in the water when they try to return home. Ricky prays for his friend to be saved and his prayers get answered. Ricky and Bobo learn an important lesson, don’t ever be bad and sneak out of the house unless you have a good friend like Bobo the Mouse.

Jimmy the Giraffe

With a deep message and told in perfect rhyme, Jimmy the Giraffe gives a message of determination. With lovely illustrations, the happy Giraffe learns an important lesson: "How to be yourself." I recommend this book and the series of Mark Albini for ages 5-8 years old - K-3 graders.

I’m reviewing this book as part of the Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/17) is its fourth year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness on the ongoing need to include kid’s books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.

Despite census data that shows 37% of the US population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. Using the Multicultural Children’s Book Day holiday, the MCBD Team are on a mission to change all of that.

Multicultural Children's Book Day Experience
