Día de los Muertos: Celebra las tradiciones con LuzDelMes

El día de los muertos no es una versión Mexicana de Halloween. Es una fiesta cultural que combina rituales aztecas indígenas con el catolicismo donde se origina la tradición. El Día de los Muertos se celebra el (Nov.1ro) en el Día de Todos los Santos y termina en(Nov.2nd) Día de los Difuntos, festividades menores católicos. "Santidad y Vida" parte de nuestra esencia. 

Día de los Muertos honra a los muertos como parte natural de la esencia humana. El día de muertos celebra las vidas de los difuntos con comidas, bebidas y actividades de los muertos en vida. Los muertos son parte de la celebración de la comunidad y despierta de su sueño eterno a compartir la fiesta con sus seres queridos.

The Day of the Dead is NOT a Mexican version of Halloween. "Dia de los Muertos" is celebrated on All Saints Day (Nov. 1^st) and All Souls Day (Nov.2^nd) minor Catholic holidays.  It is cultural holiday that combines 

indigenous Aztec rituals with Catholicism where the tradition is originated. 

Dia de los Muertos honors the dead as natural part of the human essence. The Day of the Dead celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. The dead are part of the community celebration and awakened from their eternal sleep to share the festival with their loved ones.

According to research, the most familiar symbol of Dia de los Muertos are the Calacas (Spanish pronunciation:
[kaˈlaka], a colloquial Mexican Spanish name for skeleton) and Calaveras (skulls). However, the most popular costume are the Catrinas is the Mexican representation of the dead created by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada always portrayed as enjoying life, often in fancy clothes and flowers. Poems and song are signed in its honor.

RECETAS LuzDelMes: Cinco De Mayo en New York

Cinco De Mayo, The holiday of May 5th, is not Mexican Independence Day! This day commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is a regional holiday celebrated in the City of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. Independence Day is actually on September 16th. 

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become ever more popular along the U.S. Mexico border and in parts of the U.S. It is a celebration of Mexican culture, food, music, beverage and customs unique to Mexico. Several cities throughout the U.S. hold parades and concerts .

Maypole - Cruz de Mayo

Maypole is celebrated on May 3rd. According to traditions, it is a pre-Christian celebration known as the feast of the Mays or Maypole. It is a celebration held half of the spring in honor of nature. In particular, it celebrated decorating a totem with ornaments with ritual dances.

With the arrival of Christianity, this feast was adapted to the new faith, replacing the totem with the Christian cross. The cross of May and the Palo de Mayo festivities remain parallel in some Central American countries. 

Day of the Cross 

celebrates the finding of the “True Cross” in 326, and in Mexico is related to ancient Mayan and Aztec Spring festivals.

In Colombia, my grandma taught me to prepare a Cross with the dry palms from Palm Sunday and make this prayer, "Holy Cross of May, my lawyer you should be, renounce to Satan, who with me, will not count because the day of the Holy Cross I said 1000 times: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus...'"

Fiesta de las Cruces o Cruz de Mayo, se celebra el 3 de Mayo.

La fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo es una celebración precristiana conocida como Festividad del Palo de Mayo. Recuerda el encuentro de la Santa Cruz en el año 326 D.C. También se celebra en la mitad de la primavera rindiendo honor a la naturaleza.

Los Mayas y Aztecas la festejaban adornando un tronco con flores, mientras se cantaba y hacían danzas rituales . Con la llegada del cristianismo, la fiesta remplaza el tótem por la cruz cristiana.

En algunos países centroamericanos se mantienen en forma paralela las festividades de la Cruz de Mayo y del Palo de Mayo.

En Colombia, mi abuelita me ensenó a preparar una cruz con las palmas secas del Domingo de Ramos y hacer esta oración para el día de la Santa Cruz, “Santísima cruz de mayo, mi abogada habéis de ser, renuncio a Satanás que conmigo no contará porque el día de la Santa Cruz dije 1000 veces Jesús…’

Our Lady of Candelaria or Fiesta de la Candelaria

The Celebration of Our Lady of Candelaria or Feast of Candelaria remind us of the appearance of the Virgin of la Candelaria in Tenerife, in the southwest of Spain at the beginning of the XV century.

FACTS:

1.    Celebrations most commonly take place on February 2^nd.

2.   Celebrated on the official presentation of Jesus to the Temple of Jerusalem, 40 days after Virgin Mary has been cleansed from the delivery, following the Old Testament’s law.
3.   In Europe, the Presentation was celebrated with processions and candles to be blessed after mass. Over time, the feasr became the " Candlemas"
4.   In Mexico, it is customary that the person who got “The baby Jesus” in the “Rosca de Reyes” has to make tamales or atole, both corn-based dishes. This tradition also carries Pre-Hispanic roots; February 2nd was the eleventh day of the first month on the Aztec calendar.

Celebrate Traditions!

 Fiesta de la Candelaria

La celebración de nuestra Señora de la Candelaria o fiesta de la Candelaria nos recuerdan la aparición de la Virgen de la Candelaria en Tenerife, en el sudoeste de España a principios del siglo XV.

HECHOS:

1.   La celebración más comúnmente ocurren en el 2 de febrero.

2.   Se celebra la presentación oficial de Jesús en el templo de Jerusalén, cuarenta días después de que María Virgen ha sido purificada después del nacimiento de Jesús cumpliendo con la ley del Antiguo Testamento. 

3.   En Europa, el día de la Presentación era celebrado con velas en procesión y se le llama la Misa de Velas.

4.   En México, es habitual que la persona que le salió el "Niño Jesús" en la "Rosca de Reyes" tiene que hacer tamales o atole, dos platos a base de maíz. Esta tradición también tiene raíces Prehispánicas; el 2 de febrero era el undécimo día del primer mes del calendario azteca.

RECETA LuzDelMes: Three King Cake Tradition - Tradicional Rosca de Reyes

                     The Three Wise Men Are Coming! 

On January 6, most of the Hispanic world celebrates El Dia De Reyes, the Epiphany, remembering the day when the Three Wise Men following the star to Bethlehem, arrived bearing their treasured gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the Baby Jesus.

Three King Cake is a circular fruitcake inside which a small hidden statue of a baby Jesus. The person, who finds the child Jesus, must make a feast day of La Candelaria, which is on February 2^nd.  That day is invited the same group that was at Three Kings party and the guess brings tamales.

Why is a plastic Baby hidden inside King Cakes? According to traditional Catholic teaching, it represents the flight of the Holy Family from King Herod. However, in Spain, they hide a King inside the cake.

Happy Three Kings Day!

¡Ya Vienen Los Reyes Magos! 

El 6 de enero, la mayor parte del mundo hispano celebra El Día De Reyes, la Epifanía, recordando el día cuando llegaron los tres Reyes Magos siguiendo la estrella hacia Belén, llevando sus preciados regalos de oro, incienso y mirra para el niño Jesús.

La Rosca de Reyes es una tradición que viene de Francia y consiste en un pastel circular que significa el amor de Dios, que no tiene principio ni fin. Decorado con frutas cristalizadas que representan las piedras preciosas en las coronas de los Reyes Magos trayendo, paz, amor y felicidad. Dentro de la rosca se esconde una pequeña  estatua del niño Jesús. Según la enseñanza católica tradicional, esto representa la huida de la Sagrada Familia a Egipto cuando sus padres, Maria y José, se llevaron al Niño para esconderlo del rey Herodes. 
La persona, que se encuentre al niño Jesús, será el guardián del bebe hasta el día de La Candelaria, que es el 2 de febrero cuando se celebra la presentación del Niño Jesús al Templo.  Ese día se invita el mismo grupo que estaba en la fiesta de los Reyes Magos y el huésped trae tamales para celebrar la fiesta.

En la tradición original, en Francia se escondía un haba y en España un Rey dentro de la Rosca. Las tradiciones varían pero el sentido es el mismo, adorar al Niño Jesús quien es la razón  de la celebración. 

Curiosidades: En algunos países los niños acostumbran dejar pajas de heno y agua para los camellos de los Reyes Magos, y sus boticas o zapatos para que los Reyes los llenen de regalos.
