Indigenous Peoples Day and Reflection
History can be remembered from different perspectives. What some call discovery, others remember as the beginning of profound loss and transformation.
As we reflect on this complex history, may we move beyond opposing narratives toward a deeper commitment to cultural understanding and care for the Earth we share.
October 12 invites us to reflect on history, faith, and the many stories that shape our shared world.
In Spain, this date celebrates the Virgen del Pilar, Our Lady of the Pillar, a beloved Marian devotion rooted in Catholic tradition. For many, Mary represents faith, hope, and the comfort of a mother's presence.
Across the Atlantic, October 12 also recalls the encounter between Europe and the Americas in 1492—a turning point that brought profound changes, suffering, and transformation to Indigenous peoples whose civilizations, knowledge, and spiritual traditions had flourished long before the arrival of Columbus.
To remember this history responsibly is to make room for different perspectives, honor Indigenous peoples as living communities, and recognize the dignity of every culture.
Literature preserves memory. Culture gives meaning to identity. Spiritual reflection invites us to consider our place within creation.
May we approach Indigenous histories and traditions with respect, listen to Indigenous voices, acknowledge the importance of their ancestral lands, and learn from the knowledge they continue to share with the world.
My garden reminds me that every living thing has roots. When we nurture those roots, we help life flourish. May we honor the stories of those who came before us.
