St. Lucy of Syracuse - Santa Lucia

Today, tradition remembers the brave young woman who brought provisions to the Christians who were captive in the catacombs of Rome. For his action St. Lucy of Syracuse died a martyr in 334 AD. She carried a candelabrum on her head that guided her through the caves and allowed her hands free to bring food to those in need.

St. Lucy is the patron saint of those who are blind or vision-impaired. Her name means “light.” She lived these words of Christ: “Your light must shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:16).

In some Scandinavian countries, young girls still dress as St. Lucy on her feast day. They wear wreaths with candles on their heads and serve pastries and coffee to their families. In Italy there are special pastries and foods that mark her feast day.

La tradición nos cuenta que en el día de Santa Lucia, Diciembre 13, recordamos la valiente joven que traía provisiones a los cristianos que se encontraban cautivos en las catacumbas de Roma. Por su acción murió mártir el 334 DC. Ella llevaba en su cabeza un candelabro que la guiaba por las cuevas y le permitía tener sus manos libres para llevar la comida a los necesitados.

Santa Lucía es la santa patrona de las personas ciegas o con problemas de visión. Su nombre significa “luz”. Ella vivió estas palabras de Cristo: “Tu luz debe brillar ante los demás, para que vean tus buenas obras y glorifiquen a tu Padre celestial” (Mateo 5:16).

En algunos países escandinavos, las jóvenes todavía se visten como Santa Lucía en su fiesta. Llevan coronas con velas en la cabeza y sirven pasteles y café a sus familias. En Italia hay pasteles y comidas especiales que marcan su fiesta.
