Each
year on February 14, many people exchange cards, roses, and chocolates
with their special “valentine.”
But did you know that Valentine was not just a symbol of romance? He was a
saint.
Why is it called Valentine’s Day?
The name comes from a Christian root, honoring a martyr from the
early centuries of the Church, later intertwined with Roman traditions.
Who was St. Valentine?
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named
Valentine, all of whom were martyred for their faith.
The Legend
According to tradition, Valentine was a bishop in third-century Rome.
During the reign of Emperor Claudius, he was arrested—possibly for helping
persecuted Christians escape from prison.
Before his death, it is believed that he wrote a letter signed “From your
Valentine,” an expression that continues to be used today.
