12 Days of Christmas for Writers

In the last six years, I have participated in the "12 Days of Christmas for Writers" by Julie Foster Hedlund. During days 2 and 3 of the challenge, she invites us to write on an empty piece of paper about the surprises and successes of the year, focusing on our accomplishments instead of New Year’s resolutions. Julie believes the way New Year's resolutions are traditionally made comes from a place of negativity - what DIDN'T get done or achieved in the previous year.

Due to the challenges writers have faced in recent years, this is a good opportunity to finish the year with another perspective. Here is the list of my major accomplishments during 2025👉

1. As a teacher, my biggest surprise is that I am nearing 20 years in the Public Education System, and three years in higher education as the Student Life Manager and Success Coach for the Spanish Programs. 

2. It has been an honor to serve the students and be part of the graduation and convocation Mass of the first cohort of students in the AA-CST  Spanish Program, this past November in DC. 

3. Translated three courses for the Continuing Education program, developed two Mariology courses in English and Spanish, launched on February 11, 2025, and recorded two courses for audio learning. 

4. Joined VIRTUAL events around the world through Zoom to celebrate Read Your World as a Board of Trustees. (USA), and continued to be part of Read to Me Day (Australia) as an Ambassador. 

5. Published my first testimonial novel in Spanish to celebrate my birthday in October with: "Tres Décadas:  La herencia que no llega." I wasn't sure whether to publish it, but here it is! 

6. Finished a scholarly Women's Study manuscript and was brave enough to send seven query proposals during my Winter Vacation. I know, this work will find a Publishing House and benefit readers from this study. The time will come! 🙏While waiting for the results, I am ready to enjoy the process. As Sharon Lenin says, "each rejection is a celebration that you are one step closer to getting an acceptance. "

7. Completed "The Genesis Story: Reading Biblical Narratives" Certificate. Thank you, Hillsdale College Online Courses, for this FREE course.

Christmas Novena - Novena de Navidad

When I was a child, the most awaited tradition was the Christmas Novena. During nine days, we gathered around a manger, prayed and sang "Villancicos (Christmas Carols), "ate traditional food, and received small gifts called "Aguinaldo.” After Christmas, the celebration continues with the Octave of Christmas.

HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS

Cuando niña, el día más esperado era Navidad. En casa nos reuníamos con los vecinos alrededor del pesebre para rezar la Novena, cantar villancicos, comer postres tradicionales y recibir los "aguinaldos", pequeños regalos o dinero.

La Novena de Navidad se lleva a cabo durante nueve días; del 16 de diciembre hasta antes de la Nochebuena del 25 de diciembre. Es una costumbre popular celebrar con fe, esperanza y alegría el nacimiento del Niño Jesús. 

La primera Escena de la Natividad fue creada en 1223 durante la época de San Francisco de Asís. Él recreó la escena del nacimiento de Cristo en un ritual especial y misa que celebró dentro de una cueva en Greccio, Italia, invitando a sus compañeros frailes y a la gente del pueblo a unirse a la celebración. San Francisco preparó un pesebre vacío dentro de la cueva con heno, un burro y un buey vivos. Era una combinación de simplicidad, y espiritualidad centrada en la pobreza.

Celebrate Traditions - Celebrando Tradiciones

When I was a child, the most anticipated day was Christmas. At home, we gather with neighbors around the manger to pray the “Novena de Aguinaldo” nine days before Christmas. Those days were unforgettable, and I miss them every year. 

During the Novena, we prayed, sang "Villancicos, "ate traditional food, and received gifts called" Aguinaldo. " In some places, the 'Aguinaldo' is a small gift, money, or songs.

Actually, I celebrate the Novena far from my homeland with my new family. Passing traditions is an important part of honoring our ancestors. 

According to the story, the creator of the "Novena" was Fray Fernando de Jesús Larrea, a Franciscan who at the end of the eighteenth century sent her to the founder of the "Colegio La Enseñanza" in Bogotá to Doña Clemencia de Caicedo y Vélez.  "She believed in the importance of training women in Christian values to change society.”

The "Novena" takes place over nine days, from December 16 to Christmas Eve on December 25. It is a popular custom that celebrates faith, hope, and joy at the birth of the Child Jesus. 

 The first Nativity Scene was created in 1223 by St. Francis of Assisi. He recreated the scene of Christ's birth in a special ritual and Mass he held inside a cave in Greccio, Italy, inviting his fellow friars and the townspeople to join the celebration. St. Francis set up an empty manger inside the cave with hay and a live ox and a donkey. It was a combination of poverty-centered spirituality.  

Another ritual, the Blessing of the Bambinelli, is a Roman tradition celebrated each year on the third Sunday of Advent. Families present the Baby Jesus (Bambinelli, in Italian) from the family nativity scene for a blessing at Holy Mass. Lovely tradition!

Cuando era niña, el día más esperado era la Navidad. En casa, nos reunimos con los vecinos alrededor del pesebre para rezar la "Novena de Aguinaldo" durante nueve días antes de Navidad. Aquellos días eran inolvidables, y los echo de menos cada año.

Durante la Novena, rezamos, cantamos "Villancicos", comimos comida tradicional y recibimos regalos llamados "Aguinaldo". En algunos lugares, el 'aguinaldo' es un pequeño regalo, dinero o canciones. En realidad, celebro la Novena lejos de mi tierra natal con mi nueva familia. Transmitir tradiciones es una parte importante de honrar a nuestros antepasados.

Hoy, en la solemnidad de la Santa Casa de Loreto, recibí este magnífico Juego de Nacimiento. Preservar las tradiciones queridas es esencial. Esto encarna el espíritu de la Temporada.
