What is a Haiku?

April is set aside as National Poetry Month to celebrate poets and poetry. The Academy of American Poets and other  poetry organizations schedule events this month.

For more information visit: National Poetry Month.

My favorite poetry style is a Haiku (plural Haiku).

hai·ku /ˈhīˌko͞o(noun)
  1. a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world.
Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional Japanese poetry: 5/ 7/ 5 syllables. Some Haiku:

Senses Haiku
 By Maritza M. Mejia@2015

Sightless
If we were sightless
We would see human’s essence
Not skin colors

 Unscented
If we were unscented
We do not enjoy nature
And the beauty of life

Unheard
Voice without sound,
Are we listening to others?
Attend to be heard!

 Tasteless
Life without flavor,
Empty, gloomy, dim, tasteless,
Toss color to your life!

Untouched
Undesirable!
How could this be possible?
Humans need humans.

Intuition
One precious value!
Watch, sense, listen, and feel,
Follow it on your path.

Happy Poetry Month!
