Saint Joseph’s Day – Celebrate Traditions!

www.luzdelmes.com
Each year on March 19th, many families prepare a table or altar in honor of Saint Joseph, Patron Saint of the poor. My Italian friends prepare a table with a well decorated fine linens, flowers and decorative breads. My favorites are the orange-cranberry scones.
Why is Saint Joseph the patron Saint of the poor?
We know little about Saint Joseph, but his humble work as a carpenter remains us or poor salary and humble life. (Matthew 13:55).

Who is St. Joseph?
Everything we know about Saint Joseph comes from the Bible. He was the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus. Despite his humble work, Joseph came from a royal lineage from David, the greatest king of Israel (Matthew 1:1-16 and Luke 3:23-38).
The circumstances of Joseph's death are not known, but it is likely that he died before Jesus’ ministry began and before Jesus’ Crucifixion (John 19:26-27).

What is the meaning of St. Joseph Table? This day parishes observe the three practice of Lent: pray, fast, and alms-giving by preparing a simple meal and the money raised is given to the poor.

Saint Patrick’s Day – Celebrate Traditions!

www.luzdelmes.com
Each year on March 17th, many people dress green in honor of Saint Patrick.” It is a day to celebrate Irish Traditions.
Why is Saint Patrick the patron Saint of Ireland?
Patrick was a Christian missionary, but he was not actually Irish. He is recognized for converted Ireland to Christianity in the AD 400s.
What is the meaning of St. Patrick Day?What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival. Irish culture or not, people celebrate with parades, special foods and wear green.
Who is St. Patrick?
Patrick was born around 375 A.D. in Britain. His Roman parents were Calpurnius and Conchess in charge of the colonies. They were wealthy. Patrick was kidnapped and brought to Ireland. Years later, he escaped and went back to Britain.
In his own land, he became a priest and soon a well-know bishop. Patrick had several dreams about the suffering of the Irish people and returned to save them. There are several legends about what happened with Saint Patrick in Ireland. The most prominent claiming he met the chieftain of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him, but he was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).

Valentine’s Day – Celebrate Traditions!

www.luzdelmes.com
Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, flowers or gifts with their special “valentine.”
What is Valentine? It is a day to celebrate love and friendship.
Why is called Valentine? It comes from a Christian martyr from the 5th century and Roman Traditions.
Who is St. Valentine? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine, all of whom were martyred.
One legend states that Valentine was a priest or even a Bishop who served during the third century in Rome during Emperor Claudius.
When the Emperor decreed that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he banned marriage for young men. Valentine realized the injustice of the decree and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. When he was arrested and placed in the custody of a judge who had a blind daughter, Valentine cured her blindness. The judge and his family became Christians.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape from Roman prisons. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is dim, we dedicate this day to celebrate love.
