Black History Month

February is Black History Month. This month was established in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moorland. In 1976, President Ford
began the succession of U.S. presidents that recognized Black History Month as an opportunity to expose the rich heritage, stories, and contributions made by the black community to the USA.

How could we celebrate Black History Month?

While it’s wonderful to recognize the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, there are many museums,  cultural centers and school activities that hold special exhibits.

February Spotlight to Black History Month

LuzDelMes Book of the Month

                   What is Black History Month?

Months are used by various groups and organizations to raise awareness
of an issue, event, or celebrate something. This celebration started when Dr. Carter G. Woodson noticed that there were no academic journals to counter racist scholarship and no professional presses would accept materials about African Americans. He founded Black History Week in 1926.

In the United States and Canada, February is Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month, it is an annual observance for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African Diaspora.
There are so many amazing books from which to choose, visit:http://multiculturalkidblogs.com/black-history-month-2016/

In honor of Black History Month, I have selected Sanders’ Kids guide since it includes a host of activities, games and songs to engage the reader and to help him better appreciate the contributions of the people highlighted in the book.

For me, Vanilla and Chocolate is a useful tool to read to k-1st graders to introduce Black History. It is an easy to read story to understand the topic of discrimination and segregation with a simple connection with Ice-cream flavors.
