When I was a child, one of the most observed traditional holidays in Colombia, during December, was the Little Candles’ Day ((Día de las Velitas). It is celebrated on the eve of the Immaculate Conception. On December 7th, people place candles and paper lanterns on windowsills, balconies, sidewalks, everywhere they can be seen, in honor of the Virgin Mary and her Immaculate Conception. Today, far from home, I keep and share this tradition.

As an adult, I have the opportunity to meet new people and celebrate new traditions. I adopted the devotion to celebrate “La Purisima”. It is a nine days of prayers and songs before December 8^th in honor of the Virgin Mary and her Immaculate Conception. The last day of the Novena, families and friends gather together to sing, share goodies, and even have some fireworks. It’s similar to my native devotion, but different in details.

As a teacher, I’ve learned different traditions around the world while doing projects with the students. The similarities and differences between traditions make them special, but there is a common purpose: Gather families and friends together around a table.

Las Fiestas y tradiciones Decembrinas

Tiene una razón y tradición

Si no tienes una tradición,

¡Vamos a encontrar la razón!

Las tradiciones familiares con música y comida alrededor de una mesa, crean recuerdos imborrables.  ¿Qué tradiciones tienes para la temporada?

Te cuento, cuando era niña, uno de los días festivos tradicionales más observados en Colombia era el Día de las Velitas, que se celebra la víspera de la Inmaculada Concepción. El 7 de diciembre, las personas colocan Velas o Faroles de papel en los marcos de las ventanas, balcones, aceras, entrada de las casas, en honor a la Virgen María y su Inmaculada Concepción. Hoy, lejos de casa, mantengo y comparto ésa tradición.

 "Gorra para la Purisima"

Como adulta, tuve la oportunidad de viajar y conocer personas con diferentes tradiciones. Adopté la devoción Nicaragüense de celebrar “La Purísima”. Son nueve días de oraciones y canciones antes del 8 de diciembre en honor a la Virgen María y su Inmaculada Concepción. El último día de la Novena, las familias y los amigos se reúnen para cantar, compartir golosinas e incluso tener algunos fuegos artificiales. Es similar a mi devoción nativa, pero diferente en detalles.

Como profesora, he aprendido diferentes tradiciones de todo el mundo mientras hacemos proyectos con los estudiantes. Esta semana empezamos la semana del Hanukkah que simboliza el Milagro de las Luces donde se enciende nueve velas en un Menorah cada noche.

Las similitudes y diferencias entre las tradiciones las hacen especiales, pero hay un propósito común: 

reunir las familias y amigos alrededor de una mesa y encender una VELA o CANDELABRO.
