Book Review and Activity of New Kid by Jerry Craft

I am not a big fan of comic books/graphic novels, but this is the matching book I was assigned to review for Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020. New Kid by Jerry Craft has more substance than a typical middle grade graphic novel.
The main character, Jordan Banks, was a really strong young boy to do what he loves most drawing cartoons. I appreciated how the author presents him as a positive character that remains calm despite questioning some of his feelings and friendships. He is definitely a character that many kids will probably relate to. This is the perfect book for anyone who has ever started at a new school and felt out of place or not represented. It talks about mainly the way people of color regularly deal with micro-aggression as Latin people deal with assumptions.
The story begins when Jordan is beginning 7th grade at a new and prestigious school well known for its academics, but there aren't many kids that look like him. He manages to find a way to turn the year into a positive experience. As he's attending school, he realizes that he has another identity that shows when he's around different people. He battles deciding which one is the real him.
His art is embedded throughout the text and gives the reader an inside look at Jordan’s thoughts. The drawings are informative, oftentimes hilarious, and contain deep feelings and thoughtful messages. I highly recommend this graphic novel for grades 4-8.
