Holy Saturday ~ Sábado Santo

Holy Saturday

This day commemorates the time of darkness and waiting when Jesus was in the tomb. It is also a day for final preparations before Easter.

While touring the Old City of Jerusalem, we visited  the Chapel of Flagellation, the Chapel of Condemnation, and the Lithostrotos, the site of the Antonia Fortress where Julius Caesar resided at the time of Christ and where Jesus was condemned to death.

We meditated on the Sacred Scriptures - Luke 24:1-12 -and went to Jesus's burial place... Same place of His Glorious Resurrection.

This place is home to two of the holiest sites in Christianity – the site where Jesus was crucified, known as Calvary, and the tomb where Jesus was buried and then resurrected. -

Good Friday ~ Viernes Santo

Good Friday

Today, it is the only day of the year in which Holy Mass is not celebrated. It's a day of fasting and  solemn prayer. We commemorate the liturgy of the Passion and Death of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Many Catholic Churches have a Stations of the Cross prayer service, as well as a Veneration of the Cross service. Let's meditate! - Luke 23:34-

This is the GOLGOTHA OR CALVARY: The place where Jesus was crucified on the hilltop and is located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

While touring the Old City of Jerusalem, we, first, visited  the Chapel of Flagellation, the Chapel of Condemnation, and the Lithostrotos, the site of the Antonia Fortress where Julius Caesar resided at the time of Christ and where Jesus was condemned to death. (Luke 23:13-25; John 19)

         VIERNES SANTO

Holy Thursday ~ Jueves Santo

Holy Thursday

Maundy Thursday:

This is the first day of the Easter Triduum, the most sacred days of the Catholic faith. It commemorates the night before Jesus died and the Last Supper celebrated by Jesus and his disciples.

In the Lord's Supper, He made some unexpected changes in the ritual of the Jewish Passover Meal. Today, we celebrate The Lord’s Supper, following Jesus' command, “Do this in remembrance of me. “ (Luke 22'19)

It was during the Last Supper that Jesus taught his disciples that the Eucharist is truly His Body and Blood. It is the origin of Christian life, providing the life-giving grace of Christ.

“The Eucharist is the Source and Summit of the Christian life. “ (CCC, 1324)

This collage shows The Upper Room, traditionally identified as the place of Jesus' Last Supper and the original meeting place of the early Christian community.

  • The Agony in the Garden: Following the Last Supper, Jesus went to Gethsemane to pray, experiencing severe emotional and spiritual suffering, stating his soul was "exceedingly sorrowful, even to death".
  • Key Biblical Passages:
    • Matthew 26:36-56 (Jesus prays, disciples sleep, betrayal by Judas)
    • Mark 14:32-52 (Jesus’ intense suffering and apprehension)
    • Luke 22:40-53 (Sweating blood, angel strengthens him)
    • John 18:1-11 (Jesus identifies himself to the soldiers)

"(CIC, 1324) "

Beginning Holy Week: A family Journey~Iniciando Semana Santa: Un viaje en familia

Holy Week is truly Holy Week.

I grew up believing this sacred time is meant for silence and prayer, especially during the Paschal Triduum—Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday.

For me, it’s difficult to go about work or daily routines as if it were just another ordinary week.
Don’t miss the gift of Holy Week.

Meditation for Holy Week

Palm Sunday

We begin Holy Week with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem by attending Mass. If you are unable to go, create a meaningful celebration at home:

Place a small statue or image of Jesus in the center of your dinner table.

Take a moment to remember: we are beginning the Most Sacred Week of our Liturgical Year.

Pause together as a family or alone…and pray.

Happy Holy Week!

 ¡Feliz Semana Santa!
