Feast of Candlemas - La Candelaria

Today we remember the Presentation of the Lord in the temple, 40 days after His birth, and the ritual Purification of Mary. We also celebrate Candlemas, a tradition dating back to the 8th century.

SOME FACTS:

1.  Celebrations most commonly take place on Groundhog's Day (USA) on February 2.nd
2.   Celebrates on the official presentation of Jesus to the Temple of Jerusalem, 40 days after Virgin Mary has been cleansed from the delivery, following the Old Testament’s law.
3.   The deepest meaning of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple is the nickname it acquired since the beginning of Christian history: Candlemas.  It is so called because it is the day on which all the candles used in the Church throughout the year are blessed.
4.   In Europe, It is the Presentation of the Light (Christ) with processions and candles to be blessed after mass. Most know as "Candlemas."
5.   In Mexico, it is customary that the person who got “The baby Jesus” in the Rosca de Reyes” has to make tamales or atole, both corn-based dishes. This tradition also carries Pre-Hispanic roots; February 2nd was the eleventh day of the first month on the Aztec calendar

Celebrate Traditions!

Welcome February! - ¡Bienvenido Febrero!

Reflections by Maritza Martínez Mejía

February is a month dedicated to Love, but what is Love?

It is a deliberate act of my will. "Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it’s not arrogant or rude, Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful." ~1 Corinthios. 13:4-5

@Mejía2015

About Multicultural Children's Book Day by LuzDelMes

When I was a child,  I always dreamed of traveling around the world , meeting people with different cultures, tasting delicious foods, and learn different languages.

A perfect dream that I made it possible while reading!

Diversity in children’s literature has been a topic of concern to movements like Multicultural Children’s Book Day (MCBD). Authors, illustrators, educators and bloggers have been an important element to make sure children have access to books that celebrate diversity. Feature characters from diverse cultures, countries and race are an important building block of the learning process in classroom and at home. It is fundamental to teach students from early age that different does not mean to be wrong.

I’m pleased to be part of MCBD since June 2015 not only as an author, but also as a Reviewer to Multicultural Children’s Book Day and Board of Trustees. This event has helped me promote my books, received reviews for my books, increase followers in my social media (Twitter and Instagram), and meet authors from around the world. Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2024 (1/25/25) is in its 11th year! Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen founded this non-profit children’s literacy initiative; they are two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural diverse books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators. Read Your World’s mission is to raise awareness of the need to include kids’ books celebrating diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission and history HERE.
