According to astronomy, the solstices (from the Latin solstitium (sol sistere), i.e. "Still Sun". They are the times of the year when the Sun reaches its greater or lesser apparent height in the sky, and the duration of the day or night are the maximum of the year, respectively.
The winter solstice, the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It falls on December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20 or 21 in the Southern. It is also called the hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun.
Since ancient times, people all over the world have
recognized this important astronomical event and celebrate the succeeding “return” of
the Sun after the dark winter. Religious and traditional celebrations
intertwined with this event; such as, the Roman festival of Saturnalia, the
Scandinavian festival of Yule, the St. Lucia’s Day, the Incan
celebration of the Sun god or the
Indians celebration of the Hopi in

The meaning or interpretation of this event varies according to different cultures and traditions, but most of them recognize the Winter Solstice as a period of Renewal and Renaissance. The symbolic interpretation of the return of the sun after the long winter is the perfect image of the Birth of Jesus. (Luke 2:7). He came to bring light to the world after a long period of darkness. Según los astrónomos, los solsticios (del latín solstitium (sol sistere), es decir, "Sol quieto", son los momentos del año en los que el Sol alcanza su mayor o menor altura aparente en el cielo, y la duración del día o de la noche son las máximas del año, respectivamente.
El solsticio
de invierno, es el día más corto y la noche más
larga del año. El solsticio de invierno cae el 21 o 22 de diciembre en el hemisferio norte y el 20 o 21

del largo invierno es la imagen perfecta del nacimiento de Jesús. (Lucas 2:7),
