Welcome September! - ¡Bienvenido September!

Reflections by Maritza Martínez Mejía
Fall is almost near and the last quarter of this year is around the corner. A different year, but have perseverance and most of all trust in you.

         Blessings and Happy September!

El otoño está cerca y el último cuatrimestre del año a la vuelta de la esquina. Un año diferente, pero ten perseverancia y sobre todo fe en ti.
¡Bendiciones y Feliz Septiembre!

  1. September melancholy poems...
    SEPTEMBER 1

    September first, Mom

    recalls German invasion.

    Never forget.

    One red leaf on green

reminds me fall is on its way.

    Bright white, death angel

    mushroom cautions life

    is tenuous, transient.

    Mosquito stings, and

    I remember it is still

    Summer.

This tenuous life 2020 09 YF

    The phone rings.

    One more friend… gone forever.

    Some leave suddenly:

    Man killed riding bicycle. 36.

    Others after a long illness…

    Cancer. 43. 52. 69.

    Gun in hand

    17-year old boasts:

    “I just killed somebody.”

    Violence rages.

    Covid kills thousands each day

though strangely, no one I know…

    I should feel fortunate…

I have lived longer than those others…

    Death is imminent…

    Life is tenuous.

    At any moment,

    any of us could depart.

Dogs are old. Mom is old.

    I feel old – though I’m not…

    I sit at desk, typing.

    Through the window,

    wind sighs,

    crickets chirp love songs

    birds sing peaceful melodies

    in a violent world.

    I breathe in.

    I breathe out.

    I am alive.

    Life goes on.

    Joy comes.

    Anxious 2020 09 YF

From the pit of your stomach

    towards your chest

    like a crawling spider

    anxiety creeps

    resting on your shoulders,

    invading your soul

    until

    your voice cries out

    sadness,

    terror,

    panic.

    Fear 2020 09 YF

    Each interaction

    a threat of infection.

    Do not approach!

    Keep away!

    Stay home.

    Shelter in place.

    Alone.

    Afraid,

    I venture out.

    Eyes down.

    Fear thick.

    People less and less visible.

    Mouth and nose covered,

    I don’t recognize my friend.

    At the store someone

    comes too close.

    An arm brushes my back.

    A flash of panic rises…

    What if?

    Who carries the virus

    unbeknownst to us?

    Will my friend infect me?

    SEPTEMBER TANKA 2020 09 YF

    Summer was hot, lonely.

    Standing apart, craving touch.

    Now, gone in a blink.

    September arrived

with cooler nights, green ferns turned bronze,

    here and there, a few

    crimson, yellow leaves scatter

    foreshadowing fall to come.

    Three more weeks until

    tumbling leaves crunch underfoot,

    we fall into autumn.
